We are curry lovers. End of. After trips throughout Asia and India we definitely have a taste for the fragrant curries of the East. We have sampled many of Cornwall’s curry restaurants and takeaways. As well as several of Rick Stein’s seafood restaurants for a cheeky fish and chips, but never the two together. We thought it was about time we sampled Ricks restaurant on Fistral Beach, Newquay to see what we were missing out on!
And it’s safe to say we weren’t disappointed!
Found right on the seafront of Newquay’s most famous surfing beach you could not ask for a better location. This relaxed restaurant offers bench style seating inside and out on the balcony to enjoy this amazing view.
Rick Stein Fistral is primarily a takeaway restaurant so you just queue up and order whatever you fancy. You can then choose whether to take a pew on one of the tables, or get your food all packed up to takeaway. As this spot is right on the beach you can literally walk in wearing your beach clothes and grab a bite to eat.
We were spoilt for choice with the exotic menu, and were pleased to know that the curry selection is varied throughout the year. You’re not always offered the same choices if you like trying new dishes. They generally offer a chicken, lamb, seafood and vegetarian option, and the dishes usually include indian and thai.
Rick Stein Curry
We opted for the south indian cod curry – Meen Kulambu – and the veggie option – Vegetable Makhanawala. We teamed this with a portion of Rick Stein’s yummy beef dripping chips as we’d had a long day walking and were craving a pig-out! The takeaway offers a delicious choice of drinks to accompany your takeaway. We went for an elderflower fizz, and a rhubarb and apple lemonade, both totally thirst quenching in the Cornish summer sun.
The curries were served in the cutest take away boxes, teamed with bucket-style handles to add to the seaside experience. Both of the dishes we packed full of the freshest ingredients with a healthy portion of rice and curry. We must say that the added fresh coriander on top just finished off the meal nicely, and the flavours were to die-for!
We were both very pleased with our curries, Rick Stein’s recipes were top notch, just as we were expecting! After watching many of his travel food programs we were pleased to say that the flavours and curries on offer really were worth the visit.
We will definitely be returning, and would highly recommend this Newquay restaurant. Especially to anyone wishing to try Rick Stein’s famous fish and chips, or branch into the Asian food on holiday or when visiting Newquay.
And with views like this. Why wouldn’t you want to sit on the sand of an evening and enjoy a curry watching the sun go down…
