Borgia Bull are a part of an ever growing trend that seems to be storming the country offering unique dining experiences in pop up locations. They host events and dinner parties in Cornwall as well as private functions, wedding catering and wine tasting.
Rupert from Borgia Bull holds his own ‘Supper Club’ in Connor Downs, near Hayle so we went along to sample some local and seasonal home cooked delights. With exciting menus that differ for every event you can be sure of fantastic looking and creative taste combinations.
The Borgia Bull ethos is to deliver ‘simple yet effective quality food’ with a simple menu void of any over the top language often seen on restaurant menus. Living in Cornwall we have access to some of the best produce found in the UK. With harbours offering the freshest fish and farms giving us locally grown produce it means we have access to some delicious ingredients right on our doorstep.
Borgia Bull Supper Club
We were welcomed to Ruperts home for an evening of food offered in an alternative way to restaurant dining. With a supper club you can find yourself sat with a small or larger group of friends or strangers. We were with a mix, our table of 8 was made up of fellow Cornishmen, some of which we knew and others who we didn’t. But being in Cornwall and sharing a common interest in the Duchy as well as a love for food it didn’t take us long to make friends and immerse ourselves in an evening of great conversation.
You may be nervous of sharing your dining table with others, but please be assured it’s a wonderful way to spend an evening. You may meet some life long friends, or neighbours you didn’t even realise lived around the corner. In our group we had common interests in everything from living in the same towns for university years, to a love of travelling and even being in Bali at exactly the same time as each other two years ago. You never know where the conversation will go, but that’s part of the excitement!
The main reason people visit supper clubs is for the love of food. You may have chosen the menu due to a favourite dish or to try something new, but it helps to be open to trying something new. Our menu included local fish, Asian inspired salad and a more traditional main. Borgia Bull are constantly coming up with different dishes to add to their portfolio, so we can guarantee the next Supper Club will not look anything like ours…
Starter – Pan fried “catch of the day” served with lemon risotto
Amuse – Roasted cauliflower, tahini dressing, pickled vegetables & spiced flatbreads
Palate cleanser – Orange & cardamon granita
Main – Roasted guinea fowl, potato fondant served with lardons, hogs pudding & tarragon sauce. With purple sprouting broccoli & shallots
Dessert – Rhubarb frangipane served with rhubarb sorbet & candied orange peel.
If you are looking for something different to try for a birthday, date night, or hen do then we cannot recommend trying a pop up evening or supper club highly enough.
